Our Go-To Tips for Beginner Truck Drivers

Truck drivers are part of the backbone of our economy. They provide an essential service transporting goods and raw materials from one point to another. For this reason, many industries, from retail to pharmaceuticals, rely heavily on the services of truck drivers.

Still, as enticing as the profession may be, becoming a truck driver isn’t easy. For one, driving for days with little rest can take a toll on you both mentally and physically. On the other hand, truck driving is a sought-after profession that provides a steady income and also some level of freedom and flexibility.

If this is something you might be interested in, we have some tips for beginner drivers who want to kick off their careers.

Trucking School Tips

Certification is a must if you want to start a career as a truck driver. Every driver starts their journey at a
truck driving school . The following tips will help you select and navigate through a school:

  • Search your options, and don’t settle for the first school you learn about. Instead, make sure to research all your options and shortlist schools that pique your interest.
  • Contact local trucking companies and see what certification or training requirements they offer. Then, make sure the school you opt for fulfills all the necessary requirements.
  • Call up schools you’ve shortlisted and ask them questions about their training programs. Focus on inquiries related to costs, class sizes, practical training, and job placement. This will help you narrow your list down to some finalists.
  • To help cut costs, look for schools accredited by the U.S. Department of Transportation. They usually offer scholarships, grants, or student loans.
  • Be ready to study a lot. Most training programs are fast-paced, and you will need to put in a lot of effort to keep up.

Job Searching Tips

Finding a job is probably the most challenging part of the process. To improve your chances of landing a job, take note of the following tips:

  • Find a trucking school that offers job placement after your training. Big schools usually pair graduates with companies as soon as they get their certification.
  • Search for jobs online. There are job boards and dedicated sites where you can find vacancies specifically for truck drivers.
  • Explore your network and ask other drivers or other students you trained with if they have any leads.
  • If you opt to be self-employed, make sure you know the basics of accounting and business. Otherwise, you become vulnerable in case of an economic downturn.

Safety Tips

Once you get a job that lets you get on the road as a professional driver, your next goal should be to remain as safe as you can. The following tips will help you practice road safety:

  • Pre-inspect your truck before you head out. During the inspection, check the brakes, mirrors, horn, windshield wipers, oil levels, fuel level, and ensure the cargo is secured.
  • Always follow the basics. Wear a seatbelt, and don’t use your phone while you drive.
  • Make sure you follow all traffic rules. For example, use an indicator when changing lanes, stay within the speed limit, and always be mindful of road signs.
  • Keep a safe distance from other cars on the road, and remember that trucks take longer to stop.
  • Try to avoid and steer clear from aggressive drivers. Let them pass you if you do come across them on the road.
  • Drive slowly in construction and work zones.

Fuel-Saving Tips

Saving fuel is essential to maximize every truck driver’s profitability. The following tips will help you achieve fuel efficiency:

  • Avoid speeding as it results in more fuel consumption and increases the risk of an accident. Instead, try to maintain a consistent speed and use cruise control when you can.
  • Load the cargo evenly. Cargo loaded and stacked unequally puts more load on the truck. This results in the use of more energy and fuel to carry the load.
  • Plan your route before you head out to avoid traffic congestion and idling. Both can result in a lot of fuel wastage.
